Tampa Bay Watch is recruiting volunteers to create an oyster shell bar on the shoreline of McKay Bay. McKay Bay is an ecologically important estuary located in the heart of a heavily industrialized area in Tampa that has provided habitat to over 200 bird species and historically supported healthy fisheries. The bay has suffered from many years of developmental impacts including dredge and fill construction, urbanized and industrial stormwater runoff, industrial contamination and dredged material disposal. Because of the need for coastal restoration in the McKay Bay system, Tampa Bay Watch plans to install approximately 2,900 linear feet of new oyster shell communities on the northern shoreline of McKay Bay.
The project involves shoveling fossilized oyster shells into mesh bags, transporting the bags via boat and placing oyster shell bags on the shoreline to create a series of oyster bars. It is pretty physical labor with oyster shell bags weighing around 30 pounds each, therefore the miminum age to participate is 15 years old. This project is an effort to restore lost habitat systems to the bay, prevent further erosion of the shoreline and improve water quality through natural biological filtration.
When: Thursday, April 23 from 9am – 12pm.
Where: The project location is Desoto Park, 2617 Corrine St., Tampa, FL 33605
What to wear: Volunteers should wear clothing they don’t mind getting wet or dirty, closed toe shoes or water shoes, hat, sunscreen, bugspray and bring a water bottle.
