Svala is a line of luxury, vegan handbags and apparel, made sustainably in Los Angeles.

Svala was founded to create beautiful, stylish pieces that are animal-friendly and produced sustainably. Svala began as a line of lingerie, sleepwear and loungewear made in Los Angeles with fabrics such as organic cotton and reclaimed factory surplus lace. We have now expanded our range to include luxury, vegan, handcrafted handbags without the traditional retail mark-up. Svala, meaning swallow in Icelandic, was founded by Helga Douglas.

PREMIUM VEGAN MATERIALS

Our products are made with premium, innovative, animal-friendly, PVC-free fabrics such as Italian PU, Pinatex (made from pineapple leaf fiber) and cork. Each Svala handbag is lined with fabric made with organic cotton and recycled polyester made with plastic bottles. Svala is a PETA approved brand as well as a Fur Free Retailer.

MADE LOCALLY IN LOS ANGELES

We manufacture all of our products in downtown Los Angeles in factories which ensure that the workers are paid a fair wage and have comfortable working conditions. Each Svala bag has been handcrafted by artisans. We love manufacturing close to home as we can be a part of the process and know who is crafting our products.

THE DESIGNER

Svala is owned and operated by Helga Douglas who is originally from Sydney but now lives in Los Angeles. The inspiration for Svala’s name comes from Iceland, where Helga’s mother is from. Helga has always loved the Icelandic girl’s name Svala, meaning bird or swallow which is a symbol of love, loyalty, freedom and hope in many cultures. Svala is inspired by Helga’s love of animals and nature, her affinity for the relaxed, colorful feel of Sydney and LA and the simplicity of Scandinavian design.
