Join the USGBC-Illinois Chapter Chicago Branch for a tour and educational presentation of the LEED Platinum Harmony House for Cats, Chicago’s greenest animal shelter.

This unique program will begin with a slide presentation and building tour led by the project engineer, followed by a question-and-answer session. Tour participants will then have an opportunity to walk through the 7,100-square-foot building at their own pace, chat with Harmony House staff and volunteers, and even enter one of the main cat rooms.

Opened in July 2012, Harmony House’s cageless, no-kill adoption center showcases cats and kittens for adoption. The state-of-the-art facility replaces the organization’s former shelter and increases their capacity to shelter cats, promote more adoptions, and green their operations.

Harmony House’s courtyard design maximizes daylight and gives sheltered animals a view to wildlife supported in native landscaping, while promoting a private, benign animal shelter in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

Excellent indoor air quality is maintained in the cat shelter without using undue energy through the use of advanced CO2 and air quality sensors. Solar thermal panels, photovoltaics and geothermal wells provide hot water, electricity and heating and cooling.
