On May 23, 2015, tens of thousands of consumers, concerned citizens and activists around the world will “March Against Monsanto.”
Currently, MARCHES are being held on six continents, in 38 countries, totaling events in over 428 cities, including Tampa. In Tampa, our family-friendly activities and speakers will begin at 10 A.M. in downtown Tampa at Lykes Gaslight Park, 410 N. Franklin St, Tampa 33602. The MARCH will begin at 11 A.M.
As consumers, we have a right to know what is in the food we are eating. When polled, over 90% of Americans said they want labeling of Genetically Modified foods (GMOs).
Recently, “glyphosate”, the main ingredient in the herbicide Roundup needed to grow GMO crops was declared “a probable carcinogen” by The World Health Organization. WHO went on to further indicate that it may be contributing to cancers in humans. GMO crops are genetically engineered to withstand repeated applications of Roundup and contain this herbicide. We are ingesting this herbicide without our knowledge because there are no labeling requirements to identify GMO products.
The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has repeatedly failed consumers by not requiring independent testing of GMO foods before approving them for market and relies upon research provided by the very industry that produces them. This is a serious conflict of interest. In addition, there has been a revolving door policy between ex-biotechnology executives and the FDA. Currently, Michael Taylor, a former Monsanto employee is spearheading the FDA’s Policy on GMOs.
Tami Monroe Canal, lead organizer and creator of the now-viral Facebook page, says she was inspired to start the movement to protect her two daughters and felt that Monsanto threatens their generation’s health, fertility and longevity.
We have a right to know what’s in our food. Join the MARCH! LABEL GMOs.
