Long & Scott farms produces Famous Scott’s Zellwood Triple Sweet Corn, Great Scott’s Kirby Cucumbers and Great Scott Cabbage.
We run our business according to the idea “The farmer is the original environmentalist.” We have evolved in the production of quality produce by using hybrid seed varieties for higher yields (No GMO’s). In addition, we practice integrated pest management with intense scouting of crops and release beneficial insects to reduce chemical use. By using these beneficial insects, our productivity improves more each year. For instance, lady bugs and lace wings are released to eliminate aphids and white fly. If harsh chemicals were used, the “good” bugs would be killed off along with the “bad’ ones. Also, by using griding and soil sampling, we have been able to achieve a more precise fertilization program and using tail and surface water has enabled us to conserve our natural resources.
While we are not a certified organic farm, we do not apply any synthetic fertilizers or pesticides to the crops that are grown “bio-friendly.” We improve our soil composition by using composts and growing cover crops to replace organic matter. Sorghum is grown behind pickles to replace the nutrients that were robbed during the growing process. Iron clay pea, a legume, is grown behind corn to replace nitrogen. These crops also help to starve the “bad” bugs and promote the “good” bugs.
At the farm, everyone is committed to growing and shipping the finest quality produce. Each member of our highly qualified and dedicated staff has an important role in the successful operation of the farm. From land
preparation, through planting, growing, harvest and shipping, each member of our team recognizes the importance of ensuring that only the safest and highest quality produce makes it way to the consumer’s table.
