Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful is proud to present the Trashy Flashy Fashion Show in honor of America Recycles Day. The Trashy Flashy Fashion Show is a hands-on educational experience that encourages students/designers to integrate waste reduction practices into wearable fashion. This artistic expression combines environmental learning with fashion concepts and techniques. The environmentally sustainable high fashion designs featured in the show are made from at least 75% recycled materials and illustrate to the audience how trendy trash can be. The fashion show will challenge individuals to think outside the bin.

The Trashy Flashy Fashion Show focuses on the importance of waste reduction through “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.” These waste reduction concepts are incorporated into the designs through the use of upcycling and repurposing. The objective of this fashion show is to allow students to take what they have learned either in their classroom or through the education presentations of Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful and upcycle their waste into a wearable piece of art to be showcased down the runway. These high fashion pieces result when students intertwine fashion and art with sustainability.

This fashion show not only promotes recycling, upcycling and repurposing but it gives the students and the audience the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint through the realization of how much refuse they leave behind. Local designers, artists, residents and students in an art or design program as well as environmental and science courses participate in this annual event. This fashion show intrigues the audience through the creativity and uniqueness that go into these wearable works of art. The Trashy Flashy Fashion Show allows students to see how trash impacts their everyday lifestyle, only the designs do not show the disgust of trash but the beauty of something new and innovative.
